Marietta Square Farmers Market

by Melissa on April 28, 2011

The farmers market season is upon us! I absolutely love this time of year. Aside from being able to buy fresh from the farm produce and supporting local foodcrafters, it’s just a whole lot of fun to spend the morning browsing through the various tents and seeing what everyone has to offer.

The Marietta Square Farmers Market is a good bet to check out if you live in the Atlanta area. This large market is located in the historic Marietta Square, between Shillings Restaurant and The Strand Theater. The market features over 50 vendors and you can be sure to head home with a shopping bag filled with fresh local produce, bread, jam & preserves, cookies, dairy, fresh herbs for your garden and of course, don’t forget to pick up a popsicle from King of Pops while you make your rounds through the tents.

Now, on to the good stuff. What I brought home from the market!

If you haven’t heard of Emily G’s Jam of Love… listen up. They make these amazing, hand-poured jams from seasonal ingredients. I selected the Strawberry Chipotle because it was sweet like strawberries, but had that interesting kick of chipotle peppers. It was delicious for breakfast on top of some cinnamon bread.

Here are new friends from Garlic Clove Foods, an all natural food company that creates yummy pilaf packages. Their pilaf blends are made from whole grains, dehydrated vegetables & legumes, herbs and spices.

I selected their Garden Pilaf – their most popular blend, I believe. I will say, the pilaf was really easy to prepare and my entire kitchen filled with this wonderful, delicious smell of all the herbs and spices that are in this pilaf blend. The dish below is the Garlic Clove Foods Garden Pilaf with Sundried Tomatoes, Artichoke Hearts & Feta Cheese recipe from the Garlic Clove Foods recipe page. I substituted the feta cheese in the recipe for goat cheese, because the husband and I just love goat cheese so much!

Of course, I can’t leave a farmers market without going home with a stash of Karmic Kookies! My favorite: Chai Shortbread. The husband’s favorite: Oatmeal Currant

Let me introduce you to another new friend of mine: Big Daddy Biscuits! Lauren, aka Big Momma, creates these great all natural and organic dog biscuits. Big Daddy Biscuits offers flavors including Flee Flea and Crunchy Peanut Butter. Of course I picked up a bag of the Peanut Butter biscuits for my pups. They loved it!

And here is Big Daddy, the namesake of Big Daddy Biscuits. Now this is one sweet dog. Read about his story here.

Speaking of dogs… the Greyhound Rescue was at the market with a few of their beautiful dogs. These dogs were all race dogs that the rescue took in after their race days were over. These amazing dogs may have been some of the sweetest creatures I have ever met. They were so calm and just wanted to be petted. It took all of my energy not to bring one home with me.

The Marietta Square Farmers Market takes place every Saturday morning from April through November. Helpful tip: if you’re an early riser, get to the farmers market by 8:30am. Most of the vendors are set up by then, the crowds haven’t arrived yet and you’ll get your pick of great parking spots!
