Summer Squash with Tomatoes & Basil and a Giveaway {closed}

If you’ve been following this blog for the past few days, you know that I’m in Boulder right now.

This morning is the first day of the Food & Light Photography workshop, and I will be heading over to the Rembrandt Yard Art Gallery soon for a full day of learning food photography & styling from a few of the best photographers in the industry.

Needless to say, I’m beyond excited, and nervous!

Before I left home in Atlanta, I found these amazingly cute garden markers by Beach House Living on Etsy. These vintage forks, spoons and knives that have been re-purposed into adorable garden markers. I am planning on using them as props in photos, since I only have a couple herbs in my garden and how can you resist photographing these adorable items!

I loved them so much that I not only ordered a fork, spoon and knife set…

I also got an adorable basil spoon for one of you, my readers!

Of course, you could use the spoon as a garden marker… or you could use it as a prop in some photos. For example, the spoon would have been perfect in one of these peach basil sorbet shots.

Summer Squash with Tomatoes & Basil
Recipe Type: Main
Author: Melissa Crane
Prep time: 10 mins
Cook time: 10 mins
Total time: 20 mins
Serves: 2
  • 2 tomatoes, cut into large chunks
  • 2 yellow squash, cut into large chunks
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 3 basil leaves, chiffonade
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pan or wok over medium heat.
  2. Saute the garlic for about 1 minute
  3. Add the tomatoes and squash and saute for about 2-3 minutes until the squash starts to soften.
  4. Add salt and pepper to taste
  5. Add the basil. Optional: reserve about 1/4 of the basil for garnish.
  6. Saute for another minute, then remove from heat.
  7. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top, and garnish with remaining basil.
  8. Serve and enjoy!

My birthday is also on August 10! This spoon is adorable, I would definitely use it for decoration in food photos :) My favorite herb also happens to be basil, although rosemary is a close second.

That spoon is adorable!! That whole set is. I want to buy like 100 for all my herbs. This dish also looks incredible. Such a fresh, scrumptious dish.

I would probably put this spoon on overtime. In my garden, in photos, just hanging out next to me because it is so cute. I grow basil, rosemary, oreganos, thymes, fennel, mints and a few others. It is hard to pick my favorite but basil tends to take the cake. Rosemary and thyme is definitely a close second!

I keep my basil (and other herbs) in a small basket on my counter in a manner that almost makes them look as though they are in a garden (when I remember to stock it with herbs), and I would probably use this to mark it like a miniature garden. That, or I’d give it to my mom…

Just a few days ago actually I decided to follow my dream and start cooking. I’ve always loved to, but now I started a blog (like you!) to show people all the wonderful things they can make. Being on a budget means not a lot of cute decorations for pictures (I know those first few weren’t great, but I am working on it), and I would love to use it, and feature a recipe of yours (with the spoon) on my blog.

And my favorite herb? Probably cilantro. It can be mild or zesty, and you can use it in Mexican, Italian, or even American. Its such a versatile and under-used herb.

I LOVE cooking with basil and rosemary. My daughter is going her very own basil and chives and we add them to almost everything we eat!

The spoon would be the perfect addition for me to start styling my food photos. I can’t wait to win it and try it out with this delicious recipe! :)

hmm I would have have to say I use cilantro & parsley most frequently though basil would be up high on the list as well. =) I have sage, rosemary, tarragon, chocolate mint, sage, dill and oregano all thriving happily in my garden. The basil, of course, is way more fussy and I have it in a couple of pots that I move outdoors only after it’s sufficiently warm. I use them all. =)

That spoon (and the knife and fork) would be perfect decorations for the kitchen in my new apartment! And my favorite herbs are by far basil and chives.

Cute giveaway! I’d be most excited to use it as a prop. I gotta say, I love basil, it’s my favorite fresh herb. There really is no comparison to dried basil.
I just bought some really cute little summer squash, can’t wait to try them out in something like this.

Those are so adorable! I’d use them in my little window sill herb garden. The perfect little accessory to use there! I love the taste of basil, makes everything taste so fresh and summery!

Hope you’re loving Boulder! I was there in January and in Vail about 2 weeks ago. Isn’t the weather a treat? Much better than Atlanta temps, for sure.
I’d be most excited to use my spoon on display in the basil plant in my kitchen! I always keep a basil plant on hand because caprese salads are are so simple to make for one and quite tasty. I also like to cook with rosemary (usually accompanied by lemon).

Happy Birthday Melissa! Sounds like you’re having fun in Colorado. I love how simple the recipe is. Will have to make this soon! My favorite herb to cook with happens to be Basil!!!!!! Love that stuff. And I just planted my first Basil plant which is growing tall, and I would love to place that cool Basil spoon right next to it.

I would use it to accessorize one of my numerous basil pots! I LOVE basil and oregano, I make pizza a lot!
